"No, you can't teethe on my computer!"

To my regular readers -

First of all, thank you for following my blog. I appreciate you dropping by, even if sometimes I forget to tell you.

I owe you an apology. When I started Mama Joules, my goal was to write three posts a week. Lately, it's been all I can do to post every two weeks. You might have been wondering where we are and how we are doing over here.

Excuse me just a minute ...

["Sweetheart, that helmet doesn't go on your face. It goes on your head."]

Well, things are fine, but very hectic. I had no idea that having three kids would keep me hopping quite this much. They are all home for the summer, and things are quite busy. Especially with the toddler ...

[ominous crinkling sounds as my purse is opened]

Just a minute, I'll be right back ...

["Yes, they are cool and they do look neat around your neck, but no, you can't wear my sunglasses."]

As I was saying, life with a toddler is hectic! I forgot just how crazy things can get. Simple things, like my canned goods, have started to go missing. The remote is no longer safe. Today, I even found my credit card in her chubby little hands. I'm lucky I found her before she discovered home shopping. The last time she found the phone, she dialed her grandmother.

So, this blog is effectively going on hiatus until fall. I may get time to write this summer, but I'm not counting on it. Once the boys are back in school, I am hoping to squeeze in some writing time when she naps. I might even take a class. But, for now I have to ...

["Wait! Don't eat that!"]

OT: Where I've been lately ...

If you're a regular reader of this blog (thank you!), you've probably been wondering what Itinerant Cryptographer and I have been doing these past few months, since we haven't been posting as often. In part, we are still adjusting to life with our newest little scientist-in-training. But the other reason is that I've been drawn back to writing poetry. (You may have noticed, since posts on Fibonacci Sequence poetry, scifaiku, and an ode to Pluto have crept into this blog.)

So, I am happy to share that my poetry was recently published at Scifaikuest and AlienSkin Magazine. I also have a short (140 characters short!) piece up at the Twitterzine Nanoism. For my writing friends, my non-fiction article about Twitter markets appeared in FundsforWriters.

Have a good week-end, everyone!

Help with blog labels

I've decided that it's time to update the blog post labels here at Mama Joules. Frankly, my blog post labels are a mess. I know that there are cool and unusual blog posts here, with topics like walking houses and flying cars, but you probably can't find them. And that's not your fault, it's mine.

I realize that my blog labels are inconsistent. I'd like to go back through my posts and add some useful ones to make things easier to find.

Please take the time to give me your opinion in the blog post labels poll on the right-hand side of your screen. If you'd like to see me organize posts in a different way than what's listed, feel free to drop me a comment.

Thanks in advance for your input! I appreciate the help.

OT: Finished Poetry Challenge!

I'm happy to announce that I have finally finished the Poem-A-Day poetry challenge over at Poetic Asides -- 30 poems in 30 days, to honor National Poetry Month. Working on the challenge has encouraged me to try new things. You never know how trying something new might inspire you, or even inspire others.

Happy Birthday, Mama Joules!

Exactly one year and 164 posts ago, I started this blog with the hope that I could teach people not to be scared of science, maybe even to enjoy themselves and have a little fun while learning. It's been one wild and crazy ride since then. I've accumulated some unusual knowledge along the way. For example, I now know that there are 2,000 species of edible bugs in the world, that there is a museum dedicated to carrots, and that a vug isn't just a figment of Dr. Suess' imagination.

Thanks to you, my readers, for making this trip worthwhile. I'm enjoying learning new things and I hope that you're having fun along the way, too. :)

Can you still see me?

Well, I admit it. I've been playing around with the colors on this blog and I have no idea what I'm doing. If the new colors are driving you crazy, drop me a line to let me know and I'll see what I can do. Thanks!

Where is Mama Joules?

Mama Joules wants to let everyone know she's a bit under the weather right now, so it may be a couple more days till she posts something. (If I get inspired, maybe I'll write a post, but I'm not as good at coming up with things to write about as she is!)

Mama Joules has a new place to call home!

By the time you read this, Mama Joules and Itinerant Cryptographer will have moved into their new place! Unfortunately, the computer has to go into a box and our internet will be down for a bit, so we'll see you again in a few days.

In the meantime, here's some food for thought ... What are your favorite science-based movies? What aspect of science do they represent? Do the characters portray realistic depictions of scientists or do they fall into Hollywood's "weird science" stereotypes? (I have favorite movies that fall into both categories!) I'll check back with you in about a week to share my picks and see what you think!

I can't control the weather ...

even though I really want to! I was in the middle of my planned Wednesday post about the size of raindrops (irony of ironies!) when we were hit with thunderstorms. I've lost power twice, my cable is out, and my neighbor has a big gap in their formerly pristine siding. So ... I'm going to properly shut down my computer for the night and I'll finish my post tomorrow.

(That said ... my son just told me that lightning occurs in different colors based upon how hot it is. I've never heard that, so I'm going to add it to my list of things to research!)

Stay dry, stay warm! I hope to see you tomorrow. :-)

I think Mama Joules needs a slogan ...

This isn't a typical Friday post for me, but then, it hasn't been a typical week for me either. Since I've been sick, I've had lots of time to think. I've been contemplating putting up a Mama Joules page on MySpace (I think MySpace could use a little more science, don't you?), which led me to think that maybe we need a slogan over here at Mama Joules central.

These are just off the top of my head, so don't be bashful about commenting. Let me know which (if any) of these grab you:

“Mama Joules is a place for sharing ideas, because science should be fun.”

"A place to share ideas for making science fun."

“Teaching science, one atom at a time.”

"Give a man fission and he'll have a meltdown in a day. Teach a man fission and he'll have power for life." (OK, so I got a little carried with that one ... )

“Because science should be fun.”

"Sharing science, exploring ideas."

“Sharing ideas, exploring science.”

"Sprinkle some science into your day."

Thanks in advance for your input and have a great week-end! :)

Down for the count

In case you were wondering ... I'm currently down for the count with strep throat. I hope to be back to posting by Wednesday.

Take care & stay well!

Thanks for Voting!

On behalf of the Mama Joules blog, I'd like to thank those of you who voted in the poll. I've taken out my own vote (hey, I had to vote to get the poll started!) and I'm looking at the results from the ten of you who were kind enough to share your thoughts with me.

In order of priority, here's the breakdown for what you like about the blog:

Science activities & crafts / science education (5 votes each)
Mama Joules' musings / how things work (4 votes each)
Science & the arts (3 votes)
Current science news / book & movie reviews / All of the above (2 votes each)
Website of the week (1 vote)

Now, two things really surprised me about this poll. For one, I've been really focused on finding websites of the week. I guess it's not really that important. I think I'll keep that feature for now, but modify those posts to expand on why I like the website or talk about what's neat about the topic.

Which leads me to point number two: at least four of you out there actually like reading my rambling thoughts on science and life. Cool! Check out yesterday's post and have an ice cream on me. *grin*

Math at the Polls

I learned something new yesterday. I was mad that I am running this poll on my website -- promoting science! -- and my poll looks mathematically wrong. My categories add up to anywhere from 275 to 300%, depending upon when I view the poll.

So, I was sitting there stewing about this and mentioned to my husband (Itinerant Cryptographer) that you should never trust a poll where the percentages add up to something other than 100%.

He said, "Can you vote for more than one category?"

And I said, "Yeah."

And he said, "Think about it. If the average person votes for two categories, the poll would add up to 200%."

Gee, I never thought about it that way. Polling results only add up to 100% when you can vote for just one of the available options. If you can vote for more than one thing ... you get a bizarre-looking poll like mine!

It's time to vote!

With election fever running high here in the U.S., it seems like a good time to run a poll here at Mama Joules. Thanks for your vote, it will help me tailor future content to meet your needs. As always, if you have any suggestions, need to report a broken link, or just want to get in touch, drop me a line at juliekelsey [at] earthlink [dot] net.

More about Mama Joules

So ... just who is this Mama Joules? What makes her qualified to write a blog about learning to like science anyway?

When I was a freshman in high school, my entrance scores qualified me to enroll in both Basic Biology and Earth Sciences, a course of study that my adviser chose for me. I thought that my adviser was insane. I had to take two science classes? At the same time? Quickly, I withdrew from my optional Earth Sciences class and settled in to hating Biology.

I disliked both years of high school Biology, with the notable exception of my bean plant experiment. I had to design and implement that study myself. I was crazy about the author Madeleine L'Engle and, in one of her books, she describes a study in which plants were shown to have feelings (To this day, I'm not sure whether she made that up or not; I should look into that someday). So, I decided that I would try her character Calvin's experiment and grow bean plants. I would ignore one set of bean plants, talk kindly to the second set, and scream at the third. My theory was that the plants I loved, the ones I talked nicely to, would outgrow the others. I thought that the ones I ignored would grow normally. And the ones that I yelled at would shrivel up and die, right? Wrong.

First of all, I should never have tried to germinate plants in the dead of winter. Many of my seedling containers grew not beans, but mold. My Biology teacher kindly loaned me a heat lamp and a few of my plants finally sprouted. Which ones grew best? The ones I yelled at. I had to scrap my first theory. Maybe all of that yelling helped my plants to grow by giving them more carbon dioxide.

But I still didn't like science. In my junior year of high school, I did well in Chemistry solely because of my teacher. Maybe he had a great teaching style, I don't really remember. I only remember his arms. That man had the highly chiseled forearms of a Greek god. Watching his arms naturally led to me to read what he wrote on the board, which must have translated into learning.

Unfortunately, Mr. Greek god-arms left after my Junior year. We had a brand-new science teacher for my Senior year, when I took Physics. (I still don't like Physics). I did terribly in this class, as did many of my classmates.

So, when it came to college, I ignored my father's advice to major in math or science and chose Journalism. Well, that lasted for three semesters. You know what? I got bored. I had no science in my life and I missed it. Imagine that!

Well, I can't say I that had no science in my life during that time. I did take one required science course -- I chose Environmental Sciences for Non-Science Majors. I aced that class. It reminded me of all of the things that I loved -- parks, green space, recycling, saving the planet. I was hooked.

I spent my fourth semester of college with one foot in Journalism and one in Biology. After that, I never looked back. I was so far behind in my required science coursework that I went from no science courses to having to pile them on. I really wanted to graduate on time. One semester, I had nothing but science classes! My grades dropped, but I was challenged. I hung in there and finally graduated -- a semester late -- with my Bachelor's degree in the Biological Sciences.

Since then, I've worked both testing animal blood and investigating hazardous waste sites. I've earned a Master's of Environmental Management degree, had three children, and started writing freelance articles (and a blog) about science. In a strange way, that takes me back full circle to when I was a Journalism major.

Except that now, I don't hate science.

Happy Holidays from Mama Joules!

Mama Joules is going on holiday for the next two weeks.

Have a wonderful holiday season! However you choose to celebrate, remember to keep your eyes open for new ways to enjoy science. :)

See you in 2008!
